President Christine Lagarde noted that while euro area firms are increasing AI investment, the region significantly lags behind the United States in digital development and computing capacity. She highlighted that higher productivity growth from AI integration is essential to support the economy as Europe faces a shrinking workforce and substantial investment gaps.
For financial markets, Lagarde pointed out that heavy AI-related borrowing in the United States currently exerts upward pressure on long-term real yields globally. Because euro area rates often follow these US movements, European borrowing costs remain sensitive to the financing dynamics of foreign technology expansion.
