ECB Executive Board Member Discusses AI Impact on Euro Area Economy
Philip Lane highlights that AI adoption is driving investment and credit growth in the euro area while noting significant disparities in technological development compared to the United States.

The European Central Bank is actively monitoring the integration of artificial intelligence, noting that AI-related investments now account for approximately ten percent of total business expenditure and one quarter of recent credit growth. While adoption among firms and workers is rising, the ECB observes that the scale of the European surge remains smaller than that seen in the United States and East Asia.
The central bank notes that global expectations of AI-driven productivity gains may be contributing to higher long-term interest rates, which exerts a tightening effect on euro area financial conditions. Policymakers are also evaluating potential financial stability risks linked to high equity valuations and increased debt issuance within the AI sector.
