ECB Executive Board Member Highlights Eurosystem Progress in Financial Tokenisation

Piero Cipollone outlined the Eurosystem's recent initiatives to integrate tokenised assets and central bank money settlement into the European financial infrastructure.

By Orion Desk

The European Central Bank reported that its Pontes initiative has been live since 21 September 2026, enabling the settlement of transactions using distributed ledger technology in central bank money. Additionally, assets based on this technology and issued in central securities depositories have been eligible as collateral in Eurosystem credit operations since March 2026.

These structural developments indicate a push toward integrating tokenised assets within the Eurosystem's wider framework, alongside the Appia project aimed at establishing common market standards. Financial institutions operating in currency pairs like EUR/USD may monitor these ongoing shifts toward digital finance and the potential for more efficient cross-border settlement mechanisms.
