Frank Elderson Urges Banking Integration to Support European Economic Competitiveness
The ECB highlights improved bank profitability but identifies persistent national fragmentation as the primary obstacle to long-term competitiveness and the financing of Europe's strategic investments.

European banks have achieved a significant recovery, with return on equity stabilizing at roughly 10% and non-performing loan ratios declining to 2%. Despite this improved resilience and higher valuations, the European Central Bank argues that the sector remains hampered by a lack of cross-border integration, which limits the scale necessary to compete globally.
Addressing the estimated 1.2 trillion euros in annual funding required for digital and green transitions, the ECB calls for a unified banking market. Market participants note that such structural shifts, including a potential European deposit insurance scheme, are intended to enhance the flow of capital across borders and ensure banks can support long-term regional growth.
